How to Tell If Someone Blocked You From Their Story

Knowing how to tell if someone blocked your Instagram Story is really a process of elimination. The app never tells you; what it does is leave each state looking slightly different somewhere else.

Four states, one empty space

The absence of a Story ring is the symptom in every row below. What differs is what the rest of the profile does at the same time.

The 3rd row is the one people miss. A muted account's Story does not vanish — it moves to the end of the tray in grey, so if you see it there, nobody hid anything from you.

The 4th row separates itself immediately, because a full block takes the posts away too. Everything that changes in that case is in what happens when someone blocks you.

How do you check?

Four steps, ordered so the cheapest test comes first. Steps 1 and 2 settle most cases without involving anybody else.

Step 1: Open their profile

If the posts, follower count and bio load, you are not blocked. That removes the most serious explanation in 5 seconds, and it also removes the one people jump to first.

Step 2: Look at the end of your Story tray

Scroll the tray to the end. Muted accounts sit there in grey with their Stories intact, and finding them there means the Story exists and you can watch it.

Step 3: Check whether a Story exists at all

Look for a reply or a share of that Story elsewhere, or simply wait. Somebody who posts once a week produces the same empty space as somebody hiding Stories from you, for 6 days out of 7.

Step 4: Compare with an account they do not know

If you have a second account they have never interacted with, and that account sees a Story while your main one does not, the Story is being hidden from you specifically. This is the only check that returns a clear answer.

What about Close Friends?

A green ring means you are on somebody's Close Friends list. No green ring means nothing at all — you cannot tell a Close Friends Story from a hidden one, because both leave your side empty.

That is deliberate. Close Friends is designed so that nobody outside the list learns the list exists, and the mechanics are in who can see a Close Friends Story.

Does Instagram notify anybody?

No, in every direction. Hiding your Stories from somebody sends them nothing, un-hiding sends nothing, and the person hidden gets no marker anywhere in the app.
