Can You See Who Screenshots Your Instagram Story?

No. Instagram sends no alert when somebody screenshots a Story, screen-records it or saves it from an outside site, and no third-party app can recover that information. The viewer list tells you who watched, for 24 hours, and nothing about what they did next.

Instagram came close once. It tested Story screenshot alerts in February 2018 and abandoned the test by June of the same year, which is 8 years of people asking about a feature that briefly existed for a few accounts.

What does a Story actually report?

Six events, and the split is worth learning because Instagram measures the view and nothing that happens after it. Can you see who screenshots your Instagram Story? The row you want is the one this table does not have.

What happens to your StoryDo you find out
Somebody watches itYes — named, for 24 hours
Somebody screenshots itNo
Somebody screen-records itNo
Somebody saves it from an outside siteNo — they never opened your Story
Somebody shares it to their own StoryYes, if you allow resharing
Somebody replies to itYes, as a DM

The 4th row is the one people forget. Story downloaders read the public version of a Story without ever loading it as a viewer, so those captures do not even put a name on your list — the mechanics are in downloading Stories without anyone knowing.

Why did Instagram drop screenshot alerts?

Instagram never explained the decision, and the timing tells you most of it. The test ran for months in 2018 before the company confirmed it would not proceed, which puts Story screenshot alerts in the same place as several other surveillance-shaped ideas Instagram has tried and dropped.

The pattern is consistent across the app. Instagram attributes actions people take deliberately in public — a like, a comment, a follow, opening a Story — and refuses to attribute private ones. A screenshot happens on your own phone, and the app treats it as none of its business.

The single exception is a disappearing photo or video sent in a DM. Since December 2024 Instagram blocks those screenshots outright rather than reporting them, and the full surface-by-surface map is in does Instagram notify screenshots.

Do screenshot-detection apps work?

No, and the reason is structural rather than technical. Instagram exposes no screenshot events through any interface, so there is no data for an app to read, however it is built.

What those apps actually do falls into 2 groups. Some show you your Story viewer list with a different colour scheme and call it detection; the rest ask for your Instagram password, which hands over the account rather than revealing anything about anyone else. The honest version of what they sell is a signed-out view: a story viewer opens the same public Story without an account, which keeps your name out of the viewer list and still tells you nothing about screenshots.

How do you control who can capture a Story?

You cannot stop the capture, so every real control is about the audience instead. Four settings do the work, running from the widest — who sees the Story at all — down to the most specific, which is a single named account.

Step 1: Post to Close Friends instead

The green-ring Story goes only to a list you choose, and you can edit that list at any time without telling anyone. Nobody outside it sees the Story exists.

Step 2: Use Hide Story From

In Story settings, Hide story from blocks named accounts from seeing your Stories while leaving them following you. They see your posts and never your Stories, and Instagram tells them nothing.

Step 3: Turn off resharing

Story settings also control whether people can add your Story to theirs or send it as a message. Switching both off keeps a Story inside the audience you chose, which a screenshot then leaves.

Step 4: Go private, and prune the follower list

A private account limits Stories to approved followers — but everyone already approved stays approved. Removing followers is the half people skip; the full audit is in how to make Instagram truly private.

What should you assume instead?

Assume anything you post can be kept. A Story sits on somebody's screen for as long as they hold it there, and a phone photographed by a second phone defeats every technical measure that has ever existed.

Treat the 24-hour lifetime as a reach decision rather than a privacy guarantee. It controls how long a Story is easy to find, not how long a copy of it can exist.

FAQ

Can you see who screenshots your Instagram Story, what happened to the 2018 test, and what can you still control? The 5 questions below answer each one. All answers reflect the app in September 2026.

Can you see who screenshots your Instagram Story?

No. Instagram sends no notification for a Story screenshot and keeps no record of one, so nothing appears for you to check. That has not changed since the 2018 test was dropped.

Did Instagram ever notify Story screenshots?

Briefly, as a test. Instagram trialled it in February 2018 and confirmed by June 2018 that it would not proceed.

Does screen recording a Story notify the owner?

No. Screen recording behaves exactly like a screenshot on Stories, and neither generates an alert.

Can an app tell me who screenshotted my Story?

No. Instagram exposes no screenshot data at all, so any app claiming it is recolouring your viewer list or after your password.

Does Close Friends stop screenshots?

No, it narrows the audience. People on the list can still capture the Story; everyone else never sees it in the first place.
