How to Check If Someone Still Follows You
Open their profile and look under the username. Instagram shows a Follows you badge there when that account follows yours, and it is the fastest way to check if someone still follows you — 1 tap, no notification, nothing sent to them.
If the badge is missing, search your own followers list for their username before concluding anything. The badge occasionally lags, and the list is the record.
Which check should you use?
Three ways to find out, in order of speed. All 3 are silent — Instagram has no profile-visitor list and sends nothing when you look.
| Method | Speed | Works when |
|---|---|---|
| Follows you badge | 1 tap | Always, unless blocked |
| Search your followers list | 15 seconds | Always, and it is definitive |
| Their following list | Slower | Only if their account is public |
| Asking a mutual friend | — | They will mention it |
The 4th row is not a method and is on the list because people use it. Everything above it is invisible; that one is not.

Step 1: Look for the Follows you badge
Open their profile and read the line under the username. Follows you means they do, and its absence means they do not — with 1 exception covered below.
Nothing about opening a profile is visible to them. Instagram keeps no record of profile views on any account type, so this check leaves no trace at all.
Step 2: Search your own followers list
Open your profile, tap Followers, and type their username into the search box at the top. A result means they follow you; an empty result means they do not.
This is the definitive check because it reads your own data rather than their profile. Use it when the badge is missing and you want to be sure before believing it.
Step 3: Work out whether it was an unfollow or something else
A missing badge has 3 possible causes, and they look identical until you check. An unfollow leaves their profile normal with a Follow button. A block makes the profile unreachable — "User not found" for you, while the same page still loads in a logged-out browser. A deactivated account is gone for everyone.
Open the profile URL in a private window to separate the last 2. That test is the only way to tell a block from a closed account, and it tells them nothing.
Will they know you checked?
No, in every case. Instagram sends no notification for a profile visit, keeps no visitor list on personal, Creator or Business accounts, and does not report searches within your own followers list.
The only things that reach them are actions: following, unfollowing, liking, opening a Story, sending a request. Looking is not one of them — the wider picture is in seeing follower lists without them knowing.
What if they unfollowed and refollowed?
You would not know. Instagram records no history of either action, so an account that left and came back looks exactly like one that never moved.
The only way to catch it is to have been looking at the right moment, or to compare 2 of your own data exports taken either side of it — the method, and its limits, are in finding when someone unfollowed.
Knowing it happened is the easy half; what an unfollow usually means and what it usually does not is the harder one.
FAQ
The 5 questions below cover how to check, what the app reveals, and what it never does. All answers reflect Instagram's behaviour in September 2026.
How do I check if someone still follows me on Instagram?
Open their profile and look for the Follows you badge under the username. To be certain, search their name in your own Followers list.
Does Instagram tell them I checked?
No. Instagram sends no notification for profile visits and keeps no visitor list, so checking is invisible.
Why is the Follows you badge missing?
Because they no longer follow you — or because they blocked you, or the account was deactivated. Their profile in a logged-out browser separates those cases.
Can I see when they unfollowed me?
No. Instagram stores no unfollow event and no timestamp, so no screen, app or export can produce a date from a single point in time.
Does searching my followers list notify anyone?
No. That list is your own data, and searching it sends nothing to anybody.
