Instagram Notes: Who Can See Them and How Privacy Actually Works

Instagram Notes let you share short text updates (up to 60 characters) that appear at the top of your followers' inbox. Notes occupy a unique privacy middle ground. Stories show you exactly who viewed them and can be shared with all followers or the public. DMs are completely private between participants. Notes sit between these: they broadcast to a selected audience, but you have no insight into who actually reads them. This makes Notes lower-pressure than Stories — there is no view count anxiety because there are no view counts at all.

Music and Audio Notes

Instagram added the ability to attach music clips to Notes in 2023. When you add music, a snippet of the song plays when someone taps on your Note in their inbox. The same audience controls apply — only your chosen audience (mutuals or Close Friends) can see and hear the music Note. The music selection is visible as a small indicator on the Note bubble, and the song title appears when tapped.

How to Manage Notes You Do Not Want to See

If someone's Notes are cluttering your inbox, you have several options. You can mute their Notes specifically without unfollowing them or muting their posts and Stories. Go to their profile, tap the Following button, and select Mute → Notes. This silently hides their Notes from your inbox without notifying them. You can also turn off Notes entirely by going to Settings → Notifications → Messages and disabling Note notifications.

Can Someone Tell If You Muted Their Notes?

No. Muting someone's Notes is completely invisible to them. They will continue posting Notes as usual and have no way to know that you are not seeing them. There is no notification, no read receipt equivalent, and no change in how they see your profile or interactions.
