How Long Do Instagram Stories Last?
An Instagram story stays visible for 24 hours from the moment it is posted, then disappears from the profile and from everyone's feed. Each individual clip plays for up to 60 seconds. Highlights are the exception: a story saved to one stays up indefinitely, with no clock attached.
How long does a story stay up?
Exactly 24 hours, counted per clip rather than per story. A story you posted at 9 in the morning vanishes at 9 the next morning, and a second clip added at noon stays three hours longer than the first. The ring around the profile picture disappears only when the last clip expires.
The count starts at upload, not at first view. Nothing extends it — not replies, not a surge of viewers, and not reposting the same file, which simply starts a fresh 24 hours on a new clip.

How long can a single story clip be?
Up to 60 seconds, and Instagram no longer splits longer footage for you. Video past that is cut at 60 seconds on upload, so a 90-second clip loses its last 30 seconds without asking.
Photos behave differently. A still frame is shown for 5 seconds by default, and the poster can drag that to between 1 and 15 seconds in the editor. The viewer can also tap through it sooner, which is what most people do.
What happens after the 24 hours?
The story leaves every public surface and lands in your own archive, if you have the archive switched on. That archive is private to you: nobody else can reach an expired story, and no setting makes an old one public again.
Viewers lose access at the same moment. The viewer list goes with it — Instagram keeps the names of people who watched for 48 hours in the insights view, so the list outlives the story itself by a day. What that list's order does and does not mean is a separate question, covered in our note on the story viewer order.
Do highlights expire?
No, and that is the whole point of them. A highlight is a story pinned to the profile with its clock removed; it stays until the owner deletes it, and it survives the 24-hour expiry of the original.
Highlights are also public on a public account, which makes them the one part of someone's story history a stranger can still see. A highlights viewer opens them in a browser without a login, because that content is served to anyone who asks.
How do you keep a story past the window?
Save it before the clock runs out, because afterwards there is nothing to save. Three routes, in the order of how much they preserve.
Step 1: Turn the story archive on
Settings, then Your activity, then Archive. With it on, every story you post is kept privately after it expires, automatically and with no size limit.
Step 2: Save the clip to your device
Open your own story, tap the three dots and choose Save. That writes the video file to your phone at the quality Instagram stored, which is lower than your original but higher than a screen recording.
Step 3: Add it to a highlight before it expires
A highlight keeps the clip public and indefinite. It also keeps the sticker interactions attached, which saving to the device does not.
Can you watch someone else's story after it expires?
No. Once the 24 hours are up Instagram stops serving the file, and no service can fetch what is no longer published. Anything promising expired stories is describing either a highlight or a screenshot somebody took.
Inside the window it is a different question entirely, because a public account's stories are served to anyone. A story downloader takes a copy of a public account's current story while it is still up, which is the only moment that works.
How long does each kind of content last?
| Content | Visible for | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Story clip | 24 hours | your archive, private |
| Story photo in the clip | 1–15 seconds on screen | — |
| Story video in the clip | up to 60 seconds on screen | — |
| Highlight | indefinitely | until deleted |
| Story viewer list | 48 hours | gone |
| Close Friends story | 24 hours | your archive, private |
| Reposted story mention | 24 hours | gone |
The viewer list outliving the story by a day is the row people get wrong most often. You can still see who watched a story that your followers can no longer open.
Does watching one leave a trace?
Yes, and that is unusual for Instagram. Stories are the only surface where opening something puts your name on a list the owner reads, for those 48 hours. Profile visits, post views and highlight views carry nothing comparable.
That asymmetry is why "watch without appearing" is such a common question, and the honest answers are narrow — we set them out in the guide to viewing stories without being seen.
FAQ
Five questions about the clock on a story.
Does the 24 hours start when I post or when someone views it?
When you post. The timer runs from upload and is unaffected by views, replies or shares. A clip nobody opens expires at exactly the same moment as one watched by thousands.
Can I make a story last longer than 24 hours?
Not as a story. Adding it to a highlight keeps it on your profile indefinitely, and that is the only way to extend its life — there is no setting that changes the 24 hours itself.
Do deleted stories still count toward the day?
No. Deleting a story removes it immediately for everyone, and the remaining hours are not held anywhere. Deleted stories also skip the archive unless they were already saved.
How long do I keep seeing who viewed it?
48 hours from posting, so a full day after the story itself expires. After that the list is gone and Instagram does not keep a copy you can request.
Does a Close Friends story last the same time?
Yes, 24 hours exactly like a public one. Close Friends changes who can see it, never how long it stays up, and it archives the same way afterwards.
Twenty-four hours for the story, sixty seconds for the clip, forty-eight for the viewer list, and no clock at all on a highlight. Everything else about the timing follows from those four numbers.
